Top tips for registering a domain name

By Ditlev

The domain name is an essential part of any web site and registering it can be a tricky business. The good people at Nominet have written a guide on how to pick the right domain name.

I thought I’d pass on their recommendations and paste their guide below:

Why would I need a dedicated server?

By Ditlev

Greetings!
We are often asked questions like that - “Do I need a dedicated server for this site?”, “what is the advantages and disadvantages of having my own dedicated server” and “Would my site be faster on a dedicated server?” etc. etc.

I thought I’d sum up a bit on the typical answers to those questions, and outline a few typical situation where you may want to go for dedicated hosting rather than shared - UK2 provide both dedicated servers and shared hosting, but I will try not to be too “salesy” :) (more…)

Want to start your own web host?

By Ditlev

…It’s really not that hard to be honest!
If you are currently doing webdesign, IT consulting or have contacts to a lot of people through your professional or personal network, it might make sense for you to start making a profit from reselling web hosting - and by starting as a reseller its really not that hard.

The typical web hosting reseller might be a web design firm, web developer or systems integrator who offers web hosting as an add-on service. Reseller hosting is also an inexpensive way for web hosting entrepreneurs to start a company. Our reseller hosting plans allow resellers to create their own service plans and choose their own pricing structure. (more…)

Network Solutions holding domains to ransom

By David Precious

It appears that Network Solutions are immediately registering all domains searched for. In what I consider a highly shady move, Network Solutions have started immediately registering domain names when customers search for them via the Network Solutions website, and holding them for 4 days - effectively meaning that if you checked whether it was available using their domain search tools, you now have no choice but to buy it from them, locking out all other registrars.

I tested it by searching for network-solutions-stole-my-domain.com which was previously untaken, and within minutes, they’d registered it - see a whois lookup for confirmation.

The net community has naturally responded strongly to this, with calls to boycott Network Solutions.

I’m shocked that they could have morals as low as this, no matter what excuses they try to offer they’re holding their customers to ransom, pure and simple.

It appears that Network Solutions are using the same loophole as "domain tasting" (the practice of registrants using the five-day “grace period” at the beginning of a domain registration for ICANN-regulated generic top-level domains to test the marketability of a domain name).
