The simple answer to Life, The Universe, Everything… and transferring domains

Hi again,

Ok maybe not all of those things…in fact only transferring domains really, but as I sat down to write this post it seemed like I was trying to fit the proverbial camel through the eye of the needle.

As part of a major revamp I updated and re-wrote the UK2 instructions on how to transfer domains (as our process will be slightly changing soon). So I thought I’d also post a more general discussion in our blog for those of you who are confused with the options and methods out there (as it’s quite complicated). I’m grossly simplifying with this explanation I know, so please don’t get upset if I’ve glossed over the finer points!

Let’s begin by discussing what options there are for a domain transfer as there’s more than one way to move your domain or the services attached to it (or to skin a cat). (more…)

Why would I need a dedicated server?

Greetings!
We are often asked questions like that - “Do I need a dedicated server for this site?”, “what is the advantages and disadvantages of having my own dedicated server” and “Would my site be faster on a dedicated server?” etc. etc.

I thought I’d sum up a bit on the typical answers to those questions, and outline a few typical situation where you may want to go for dedicated hosting rather than shared - UK2 provide both dedicated servers and shared hosting, but I will try not to be too “salesy” :) (more…)

SSH access now live

Hi,

Just a note to say we’ve now enabled SSH access on the Business Webhosting package. We’ll be communicating this to customers by e-mail too, but it’s now live!

If you have an account on Business Webhosting (and providing it’s on our cPanel platform) you can now directly access the server from the command line to perform tasks like changing permissions, deleting files etc. (more…)
