Top tips for registering a domain name

By Ditlev

The domain name is an essential part of any web site and registering it can be a tricky business. The good people at Nominet have written a guide on how to pick the right domain name.

I thought I’d pass on their recommendations and paste their guide below:

Why would I need a dedicated server?

By Ditlev

Greetings!
We are often asked questions like that - “Do I need a dedicated server for this site?”, “what is the advantages and disadvantages of having my own dedicated server” and “Would my site be faster on a dedicated server?” etc. etc.

I thought I’d sum up a bit on the typical answers to those questions, and outline a few typical situation where you may want to go for dedicated hosting rather than shared - UK2 provide both dedicated servers and shared hosting, but I will try not to be too “salesy” :) (more…)

Basic BASH commands - Or how I stopped worrying and learned to love the command line

By Andy

Now that we’ve enabled SSH access to our Business Webhosting package I thought it’d be nice if we tried to introduce new people to the Linux command line, so if they wanted to use this feature they wouldn’t be totally lost.

There are a few basic commands and tips listed here (by absolutely no means exhaustive), most of these I would’ve really appreciated as I struggled to learn this a couple of years ago! (more…)

Server Bandwidth - what does it all mean?

By Andy

If anyone wondered just exactly what speed and amount of data allowance/traffic or bandwidth they are going to get on their dedicated server, then hopefully this will explain some of the offerings out there and what they mean (and what UK2 offers of course!). (more…)

Get the most out of your new flat screen monitor

By Esben Kvorning

So, you just bought a new flat screen monitor. You get home, you unpack it, you connect the cables, you turn on your computer and you’re expecting to see a crystal clear picture but instead you’re presented with a blurred and fuzzy picture of your desktop - far from the quality you had expected.

The reason this is happening might be because your screen resolution is not set to your new flat screen monitor’s native resolution - fortunately this is very easy to fix…

Quantum Computers

By Andy

For many of you this will probably bring back memories of a certain early 90’s TV show (well, quantum leaping at least), but Quantum Physics as a theory has been around for a very long time (since the turn of the 20th century) and the theory of parallel universes may not be as fictional as you might think… I’m sure I’ll be corrected on this but here goes on a gross oversimplification of quantum theory as I understand it;

Still running Internet Explorer 6? Time to upgrade!

By Esben Kvorning

When I was going through the browser statistics for the visitors on UK2.NET the other day I was amazed by the number of people who are still stuck on Internet Explorer 6.

UK2 Browser Statistics - October 2007

Whether or not this number is so high because people don’t know how to do upgrade or if they are running an illegal version of Windows and therefore can’t upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 is hard to say.

But one thing is for sure - it’s time to upgrade that dusty old browser!

We are getting a lot of mails today…

By Ditlev

Dear Friends,
As of Sunday, someone started to attack us. This is not your usual DDOS attack. Rather than using standard network flooding techniques, these guys are using email.

A normal day would see us receive about X million emails. Yesterday we received XX million. And if this keeps on it will be XXX million mails today alone. Because of the nature of their method it is very hard to counter without disrupting the service of customers. (more…)

Your favorite web scripts?

By Ditlev

I am trying to put together a Top10 list of the best scripts/webapplications right now, and I’d love to get your input!
With a script I mean web based solutions like Wordpress, Joomla, PHPbb, etc - could be PHP/CGI/.NET/ASP/RoR based… Opensource and Commercial welcome.

What scripts have you found most useful during the last year?
Have you seen a script that amazed you?
What scripts have you installed during the last 12 months?

Post your input below.

Thanks for your help :)
